Post-Construction Cleaning: What Builders and Developers Need to Know

What post-construction cleaning involves, why it matters for handovers and how to plan it into your project timeline.

What is post-construction cleaning?

Post-construction cleaning, often called a builders clean or sparkle clean, removes the dust, debris, adhesive residue and paint marks left behind after building, fit-out or refurbishment work. It prepares the property for handover, inspection or occupation.

Typical stages

Larger projects often use a staged approach:

  • Rough clean: removal of debris and heavy dust during construction
  • Final clean: detailed cleaning of all surfaces, fixtures and floors
  • Sparkle clean: final presentation clean just before handover

Areas that need particular attention

Fine construction dust settles on every surface, including inside cupboards, on top of door frames and within light fittings and vents. Windows and glazing often carry paint, sealant and sticker residue, and new floors may need protective films removed and machine cleaning.

Planning it into your programme

Book post-construction cleaning early and allow realistic time before handover. Share drawings or floor areas when requesting a quotation, so the contractor can plan the right number of crew.
